History

The Kilburn Family has the deepest roots in the area. Walpole NH was settled by an ancestor of John’s, another John Kilburn, in 1749. Kilburn was the first European to live in Walpole, moving with his young family from Connecticut and established a homestead near the confluence of the Connecticut and Cold Rivers, at the base of the southernmost part of Mount Kilburn. Here he built a sturdy log cabin and began to farm the fertile land, trading with local Native Americans and other passerby from time to time. Kilburn made the history books by his heroic defense of his homestead in 1755. That year a band of about 400 Canadian natives were encouraged by the French to sweep down the Connecticut River and wipe out all English Settlements as part of the effort against England in the French and Indian War. Kilburn, his son Young John, a man named Peak and his son managed, with the help of Kilburn’s wife and daughter, to hold off the raid for a full day despite being outnumbered 100 to 1. You can read the full account of this battle by clicking here. There have been Kilburns in the area ever since.

Bobbi’s folks come from both Austria, (via the New Jersey countryside) and from the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, though her people also have been in the area for many generations. It has been love of the area and its people, the deep roots and extensive families both have here, and their desire to help grow the local economy that have made them decide to stay here, now that their children are grown and flown. The Kilburn’s love to travel, enjoy the beautiful New England countryside and are avid sports fans. Mostly local teams, but not all.

Bobbi Kilburn

Bobbi has been serving as the Director of Finance and Grant Management at the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation for the last eight years and has been responsible for managing all finance, accounting, grant, and development project business functions. Before that Bobbi worked for a number of years at Mortgage Service Center, a subsidiary of the former Chittenden Bank, where she learned the world of home mortgages, loan processing and servicing. After this she joined the finance team at Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation (VYNPC), moving up to become the Vice President of Finance. When the Plant was sold to Entergy, Bobbi remained with the original VY Corporation as part of a small team of finance members that would, over the course of five years, unwind the Company and fulfill its regulatory responsibilities. One by one her team members moved on, and Bobbi wound up being the last employee of VYNPC. After transitioning the remaining VYNPC business responsibilities to Green Mountain Power Corporation, she spent some time as a financial consultant for various organizations including Green Mountain Power Corp. of Rutland, VT, the Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Austine School), formerly of Brattleboro, VT, and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. She also provided member service coordination at the Monadnock branch of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives,) an organization that mentors small businesses in the Keene, NH area. Working with this group, as well as her current work with BDCC, have brought Bobbi a deep understanding of the hurdles and travails a small business can face, and have given her amplified insight into how these hurdles can be overcome.

Bobbi serves as the Westminster Representative to the Windham Regional Commission and is a member of the Executive Committee as its Treasurer and Secretary, and she has served in the past on the Youth Services Board and Executive Committee in Brattleboro, VT. Bobbi graduated from Keene State College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, and holds an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University. John Kilburn

After high school, John enrolled in the U.S. Army where he served in Army Intelligence. He was posted in West Germany and ended up staying there for about seven years. After his enlistment was over, John enrolled in the University of Maryland, European Division. Upon returning to the states, he continued, transferring to Western New England College. John worked at this time for Ascom-Warren, an electronics company formerly in Littleton, MA. Here he instituted and managed an inventory control system utilizing APICS approved methods and an aggressive cycle count program. From there he moved to Hawaii to manage a warehouse in Honolulu. He decided to return home to raise his children in this area and went to work at Design Standards Inc., a locally owned medical device manufacturer as Purchasing Manager. While there he also researched, identified and purchased a new MRP software package designed specifically for contract manufacturers. After a few years John moved to G.S. Precision Inc. as Purchasing Manager. GSP is a manufacturer of precision machined components for many industries, primarily Aerospace and Defense. During the twenty years he was at GSP, the company experienced tremendous growth, and John’s responsibilities increased. Within a year he was promoted to Materials Manager, taking on all logistics as well as supply chain management. A few years later John was promoted to Operations Manager, where he oversaw Manufacturing, Production Control and Planning, as well as keeping responsibility for Logistics and Supply Chain in both of the Vermont facilities as well as the Mexico Plant, with approximately 500 employees under him. A few years later he was promoted to Vice President, Operations. When GSP purchased Knapp & Koester, a machining company in Keene, NH, John was moved to Keene to be Vice President/General Manager to transition the new Keene plant to the GSP Corporation. Once this was accomplished John moved back to the Brattleboro Headquarters where he took on the role of Vice President of Sales.

John left GSP in 2019 to pursue other interests and is excited about starting Mount Kilburn Business Services as a way to help small businesses to grow. He served on the board of the Keene NH Chamber of Commerce from 2016-2018; was a member of the Coaching Team at Hannah Grimes Center for Entrepreneurship in Keene NH, a non-profit organization that helps small businesses and non-profits; and looks forward to becoming more involved in the local business community.
